Winter on Vancouver Island is not the winter the rest of Canada gets. The coast stays mild and green and mostly rains; the mountains a short drive inland get some of the deepest snowpack in the country. That split is the whole appeal.
Snow, and where to find it
Mount Washington Alpine Resort above the Comox Valley is the Island's ski hill, with downhill runs, a large Nordic area and snowshoe trails. It regularly records one of the deepest snow bases in North America.
From Courtenay the drive up takes around 40 minutes, which makes ski-in-the-morning, beach-in-the-afternoon a genuine day rather than a slogan.
Mount Cain, on the north Island, is a volunteer-run hill that opens on weekends and is loved by people who prefer their skiing unpolished.
Storm watching
November to February is peak storm season on the west coast. Tofino and Ucluelet build their winter around it, and hotel and holiday-rental rates drop well below summer.
Watch from the headlands on the Wild Pacific Trail or from a beach at Cox Bay, then dry out somewhere with a fire.
Mild towns for a long stay
Victoria, Sidney and the Saanich Peninsula have the mildest winters in Canada — flowers in February, snow that rarely lasts.
Nanaimo, the Comox Valley and Parksville stay mild too, with easier parking and cheaper monthly rates than summer.
This is the season when long-stay places are easiest to find, because summer holiday demand has gone.
What closes
Smaller west-coast restaurants and shops cut hours or close for a few weeks, usually in November or January.
Some seasonal tours and campgrounds shut entirely. Whale watching continues out of Victoria, where Bigg's orcas are around all year.
Alpine trails in Strathcona are under snow and become winter mountaineering rather than hiking.
Winter practicalities
Rain is the default. Waterproof boots and a shell matter more than a heavy coat.
Winter tyres are legally required on many BC highways from October through March, including mountain routes to the ski hill.
Storms bring power cuts to rural areas. Ask your host what the backup arrangement is if you are working remotely.
Days are short — sunset is mid-afternoon in December — so plan outdoor time for the middle of the day.
