Things to do in Ucluelet: the quieter side of the west coast

6 min read

Ucluelet sits at the southern end of the same peninsula as Tofino, 40 minutes down the road, and gets a fraction of the attention. It is still a fishing town first, the trails are right in the village, and rates for a long stay are usually lower than up the coast.

The Wild Pacific Trail

This is the reason to come. The trail runs in sections along the headlands, mostly gravel and boardwalk, with viewpoints straight onto open Pacific swell.

The Lighthouse Loop is a 2.6-kilometre circuit past the Amphitrite Point lighthouse — easy, and doable in an hour.

The Ancient Cedars and Rocky Bluffs sections to the north are longer, quieter and just as good.

Beaches and tide pools

Big Beach and Terrace Beach are small coves within the village. Little Beach is sheltered enough for a swim in summer, by west-coast standards.

The rock shelves along the headlands hold some of the best tide pooling on the Island — check a tide table and go at low water.

Long Beach and the rest of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve start a few minutes north.

The aquarium and rainy-day options

The Ucluelet Aquarium is catch-and-release: everything on display is collected locally at the start of the season and returned to the same water at the end. It is small, hands-on and particularly good with children.

Storm watching and winter

Ucluelet is as good as Tofino for storms and considerably less busy. The headland viewpoints on the Wild Pacific Trail put you right above the break.

Bring proper waterproofs and check which restaurants are open — winter hours are short in a town this size.

Ucluelet or Tofino?

Tofino has the surf beaches, more restaurants and the boat trips. Ucluelet has the cliff trails, the working harbour, fewer people and lower prices.

They are 40 minutes apart on one road, so the honest answer for a longer stay is that you will use both.

Common questions

Is Ucluelet better than Tofino?
Different rather than better. Ucluelet is quieter, cheaper and has the best clifftop walking on the coast; Tofino has the surf beaches and the wider choice of restaurants and tours.
How long should you spend in Ucluelet?
Two days covers the Wild Pacific Trail, the aquarium and the beaches. Longer if you are also using it as a base for Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.
How far is Ucluelet from Tofino?
About 40 kilometres, or 40 minutes, along the Pacific Rim Highway.
