Drive 45 minutes west of Victoria and the suburbs stop. Sooke is the last town of any size before the Juan de Fuca coast turns wild, and the road beyond it — Highway 14 to Port Renfrew — strings together some of the most accessible rough coastline on the Island.
Sooke Potholes
A series of deep pools and rock bowls carved into the Sooke River, with swimming spots, picnic areas and a flat riverside trail. Busy on hot summer weekends; go early or midweek.
The Galloping Goose Regional Trail runs alongside and can be walked or cycled back toward Victoria.
East Sooke Regional Park
One of the best day hikes near Victoria. The Coast Trail runs about 10 kilometres along exposed shoreline — rocky, slow going, and far more demanding than its length suggests.
Shorter options from the Aylard Farm end reach Creyke Point and the petroglyph at Alldridge Point within an easy hour or two.
Beaches along Highway 14
French Beach is the easiest: a short walk from the car park onto pebble and driftwood with whales sometimes passing offshore.
China Beach has a 15-minute forest descent onto sand and is the eastern trailhead of the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail.
Mystic Beach, a 45-minute walk in from the same area, has a waterfall onto the sand and a rope swing, and is the most photographed stretch of this coast.
Sombrio Beach draws surfers and has a hidden waterfall in a slot canyon a short scramble from the shore.
Whiffin Spit and the harbour
Whiffin Spit is a flat gravel finger reaching into Sooke Harbour — a level 30-minute walk with seals, herons and the Olympic Mountains across the strait. It suits any fitness level.
Practicalities
Highway 14 is winding, largely without shoulders and dark at night. Allow well over an hour from Victoria to the far beaches.
Mobile coverage drops out west of Sooke. Download maps before you go.
Most trailheads charge for parking or require a pass. Bring boots — even short trails here are rooty and wet most of the year.
